Johnston wrestling team enjoying successful season

The Johnston high school wrestling team has been very busy lately, competing in several weekend tournaments, while also tackling their regular season Division I schedule.

The season kicked off back on Dec. 9 in Bristol at the Mount Hope tournament. Johnston finished in eighth place out of 13 teams from Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Three Johnston senior wrestlers Chris LaVallee (106 pounds) Brad Testa (145 pounds) and Elijah Burgess (160 pounds) all placed in the top four of the tournament.

Following the Mount Hope tournament came the East Providence Holiday Duels, where LaVallee, Testa and Burgess all went undefeated.

North Providence and Cumberland tournaments were next and,  once again, all three seniors placed and left with medals.

Freshman Jose Echeverria (113 pounds) also won a medal at the Cumberland tournament.

This year’s squad is made up of four seniors who have wrestled varsity all four years – LaVallee, Testa, Burgess and James Baccala, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The rest of the team is a rather young team with lots of promise and continues to work hard on a daily basis.

The Panthers will finish out their schedule in Division I and will end the year at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League state wrestling championships held in Providence.
