Johnston students live it up at Winter Ball

Posted

Dec. 20, 2019, was an unforgettable evening for Johnston High School students who attended their annual Winter Ball, which was held at The Graduate Providence (formerly known as the Biltmore).

Students arrived between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in their tuxedos and gowns to take professional pictures, followed by dinner on the 17th and 18th floors of the historic hotel, overlooking the breathtaking view of Providence. Immediately after dinner and pictures, the doors of the lavish Biltmore Ballroom were opened wide for students to dance the night away. The room was illuminated in every corner with light-up reindeer, elk, evergreen and a beautiful golden Christmas tree. Students and teachers alike awed at the stunningly decorated room while dancing and snacking on cupcakes set up on a classy display case in the foyer.

Per Johnston tradition, this year’s Homecoming King, Carlos Fragoso, read “The Night Before Christmas” to everyone toward the end of the dance, while Student Council members pranced around the dance floor as Santa’s reindeer. Santa and one of his elves made a special visit to the ballroom and gave prizes to students selected by random draw. These students either picked out good gifts like candy or gift cards, while others picked bad gifts like a plunger, baby wipes, or mousetraps.

Following all of the entertaining traditions, the Winter Ball King and Queen candidates were announced once students cast their votes through paper ballots. Queen nominees consisted of Samantha Gobielle, Gianna Vittorioso, Ashlyn Banno, Olivia Costa, and Natalia Soares. The Winter Ball King candidates were Josh Brien, Viktor Fragoso, Carlos Fragoso, Joseph Lavalle, and Nicholas Guenette.

Student Council Advisor Greg Russo announced that Carlos Fragoso had been voted as Winter Ball King and Gianna Vittorioso as Winter Ball Queen. The evening culminated as the court danced to the song “White Christmas” while snow blew on their santa hats and tiaras.

Without the help and support of Mr. Russo, the Student Council, the faculty and staff of Johnston High School, Cherry Hill Florist, Mare Studios, and the hospitality of the staff at The Graduate Providence, the night wouldn’t have been such a success.
