Students from Johnston High School’s outgoing class of 2017 were recently honored during the school’s Senior Honor Awards Night.

“Tonight we honor the men and women seated before you who have aspired to become the brightest and most talented of their class,” said Anthony Cabral, senior class president, during the May 17 event held at the school’s auditorium. “No matter the nature of the recognition, we realize that we are here because of our tireless efforts during our past four years at Johnston High. These awards we receive tonight are well deserved, and we should be proud of ourselves.”

The event recognized the academic work of the senior class during the last four years. Principal Dennis Morrell opened the ceremony by remarking that he had known most of the students since the sixth grade at Ferri Middle School, where he served as principal.

“It makes me happy to see that you are now beginning to see both your strengths and your challenges and that you are channeling your energy and building success. These awards recognize this success as well as your academic integrity,” said Morrell. “At Johnston Senior High School, we are a strong and inclusive community. This is our greatest strength, but it does not happen by accident. Every individual contributes to our success as a collaborative school, and I thank each and every one of you for that.”

A total of 43 seniors were presented as members of the Rhode Island National Honor Society, while 21 members were recognized as members of the National Honor Society. Six members of the school’s Academic Decathlon team, as were nine members of the Chemistry Club and four members of Moody’s Mega Math Challenge 2017.

“Your attendance tonight indicates that you possess the qualities that contribute to a successful student and, eventually, a successful community leader,” said Superintendent Dr. Bernard DiLullo. “I’m sure you will continue on the road to success as you put your heart and mind into reaching your goals. I look forward to hearing about the many successes that are ahead of you and the great accomplishments you will achieve.”

Class of 2017 awards were given to salutatorian Adam Bouchard and valedictorian Laura Wilson. The Senior Student Council President Award was presented to Vanida Singharath, and the Senior Class President Award was presented to Anthony Cabral, who was also presented the Principal’s Leadership Award.

Department Awards were presented to Laura Wilson for Excellence in Art, English, Math and Spanish. Anthony Cabral received the Excellence in Business award, while Zackary McFarlane received the award in Technology. Excellence in Physical Education/Health was presented to Vincent Florio, and Vanida Singharath was given the award for Science. Lindsey Frein received Excellence in Social Studies, and Gabriela Huezo received the Excellence Award for Italian.

In music, Edward DiLorenzo Jr. received the Woody Herman Jazz Award, Patrick Leonard received the John Philip Souza Band Award, and Isabella Batista was presented with the National School Choral Award.
