JHS girls roll past Broncos in prelims

The No. 16 Johnston girls basketball team topped the visiting No. 17 Burrillville 62-33 in the preliminary round of the open state tournament on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Panthers rolled to a big 37-18 lead in the opening half and would play strong defense in the second to seal the deal.

Tori Viau led Johnston with a game-high 15 points while Kaylin Zalewski added 13 and Caroline Howe 10. Viau shot strong in the win, scoring three 3-pointers. Sarah Bandoma also added seven points.

Alyssa Simpson led Burrillville with 14 points scored while Molly Brown chipped in seven.

Johnston will now head to La Salle Academy on Thursday evening to take on the top-seeded Rams in the Sweet 16 round of the tournament.
