JMCE set for 6th annual golf tourney

To say that the JMCE – Johnston Memorial Cancer Events – has the most unique New Year’s Day event in Rhode Island would be an understatement, for sure.

For the sixth time in as many years, the JMCE – which prides itself in raising money for that ongoing battle with cancer that strikes children – the highly-successful non-profit will transform picturesque Glocester Country club into a mini Augusta National on January 1, 2020.

“This will be our 6th Annual Polar Golf Tournament,” said Judi Graham, who founded the event and dedicated much of her free time to waging the fight against cancer. “So dust off your clubs, get a pair of shorts and your favorite T-shirt and join us at Glocester GCC on New Year’s Day.”

Ah, shorts and t-shirts on New Year’s Day?

“If you’re a wimp you can bundle up!” Graham mused with an always special smile on her face. “Also, light refreshments will be served however, we urge people to BYOB (Bring your own booze!).”

Thus, Graham further explained that the Polar Golf Tournament will again benefit the Hematology and Oncology Departments and Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence and that entrance fee for the New Year’s golf go-round is only $20 per person but players, Graham noted, “can get sponsors and if someone can’t make it on January 1, we gladly accept donations.”

“Golfers play three holes with three clubs only and dress in a variety of apparel, mostly shorts and t-shirts,” Graham, who along with her husband David Graham own and operate Graham Builders of Smithfield and serves as co-chairs along with Dewey and Tracy Uriati, went on. “It’s one of the most fun-filled golf events you’ll ever play in or attend.”

For example, from its humble beginnings the JMCE Polar Golf Tournament has become highly-popular among the membership at Glocester Country Club and last year raised a tidy sum of $2,100.for Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

In keeping with the Polar Golf’s unmatched tradition, tee off is 10 a.m. and preceded by the annual New Year’s Day photograph of the entire playing field decked out in a variety of colorful garb.

People can enter as a foursome or any combination and the public, as the Grahams and Uriatis announced, “is welcome to stop by Glocester Country Club and make a donation to the JMCE to help kids fight cancer at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.”
