Johnston High School set to hold blood drive

Posted

On Monday, May 1, Johnston High School will be hosting a blood drive from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The blood drive will be in the upper library of the school and will be open to the students, staff and the public.

Anyone willing to donate blood must either be over the age of 16, or if the donor is 16 years old they must have parental consent to give blood. The RI Blood Bank also has certain weight requirements for the donors. Depending on how tall the individual is, the required weights shift. The taller the donor is the less they have to weigh.

There are many ways to prepare to donate blood. Participants should drink lots of healthy liquids the day before. Twenty minutes before the donation, it is good to drink 16 ounces of water or juice to hydrate. It is not a good idea to donate blood on an empty stomach. The night before donating it is important to get a good night’s sleep (at least seven hours) to have lots of strength the next day.

When donating, it is a good idea to wear clothing that offers easy access to the arm. Lastly, do not forget to bring a driver’s license or any form of identification. Regular donors can use their blood donor cards.
