JHS prepares for PARCC testing

Posted

Standardized tests are a hot topic for school districts around Rhode Island. Although there are multiple forms of these types of tests, they all aspire to track student’s level of learning throughout high school.

Freshmen students at Johnston Senior High School (JHS) are preparing to take the multiple examination series of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). PARCC testing is used to assess the student’s current levels of content knowledge based on Common Core Standards. These scores are used alongside the student’s class grades and STAR examination scores to judge students the complete understanding of the content.

This past week, the freshmen class at JHS took the English Language Arts portion of the series. To prepare for the exam, the students did a trial run on the computers to make sure the Wi-Fi at the high school was capable of holding the multiple servers during the actual examination.

Next month on May 2-4, any student who is in Algebra I at the high school will be taking the math portion of the PARCC test. At the end of the testing series, JHS will be using the scores to judge how well teachers are following the curriculum and teaching to Common Core Standards.

Johnston High would like to recognize its students and staff for working well under the conditions this testing process poses. Their students have been responsible and prepared for these exams by getting a good night sleep and charging their computers while there has been flexibility with class schedules and routines.
