JHS plans annual food drive

It’s a two-fold tradition unlike any other at Johnston High School.

During the next nine days, members of the JHS Chapter of the National Honor Society and SADD (Students Against Dangerous Decisions) will embark on back to back collections that they hope will put food on people’s tables.

Emily Raposo, who serves as vice president of the highly active JHS Student Council, announced that both student groups will begin their annual Canned Food Drive tomorrow, November 8, and that the Panthers yearly Turkey Drive is set for Nov. 13 through 17.

Although there are no printed promotional pieces, the theme of the highly-important drives is, as it has been through the years, “Please give generously!”

“We go throughout the school to collect any canned food items that the students or staff has to donate,” Raposo said of the Canned Food Drive. “After this collection we donate some of the goods to the Thornton Elementary School Food Closet.”

Raposo also reported that JHS will soon be starting its own Food Closet to benefit less fortunate students who attend the school.

“The donations collected will be provided to families in our communities that are less fortunate during the holiday season,” she said. “The Canned Goods Drive will run through November 16.”

Meanwhile, the Turkey Drive will be held November 13 through 17 and as Raposo said “we have helped a lot of families in past years and we’re striving to help even more this year.”

Both the JHS National Honor Society and SADD will gladly accept donations of non-perishable food items as well as gift certificates for turkeys and people who’d like to participate may do so by simply dropping those items off at the high school.
