JHS Music Department mattress sale fundraiser a sweet dream

Who’d have thought that Tom Brady, the New England Patriots’ future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, would have anything to do with the success of Saturday’s Johnston High School Music Association’s 2nd Annual Mattress Fundraiser?

Even though the famed five-time Super Bowl Champion MVP was nowhere near Cherry Hill, he did have an effect on the day’s outcome.

Just ask Jeff DiMillio, who tried out the Brady-promoted Beautyrest Black – that features Memory Foam with Blackice – that the Pats’ superstar finds much to his liking after being shown into a hotel room by an attendant in a television commercial he endorsed during the football season.

“Is that really Tom Brady?” a mattress shopper mused when learning about the queen-size bed the Pats’ prolific passer advertised on TV. “I must say that’s quite the mattress.”

While DiMillio was trying out the mattress, his wife Susan DiMillio talked with Jason Glander of Custom Fundraising Solutions-Providence, the nationwide group that last year helped the JHS Music Department raised upwards of $2,000 at the first-ever mattress sale.

When the DiMillio’s heard of Saturday’s event, they drove to Johnston – where they once lived – from their home in South Kingstown to check out the many sales.

Like what Glander described as an “interesting crowd of shoppers”, the DiMillio’s were impressed with the overall layout inside the JHS Cafeteria that was filled with all brand name beds and large variety of pillows.

Glander, though, didn’t divulge whether or not the couple purchased the Beautyrest mattress but did say “so far we’ve sold 10 mattresses and 14 pillows and the day is far from over.”

The CFS Providence area manager also noted that he spoke with JHS Music Department Chairman Ron Lamoureux and Matt Gingras about “pending sales” and once he has a total figure that Saturday’s sale he’ll announce the group’s donation.

“Preliminary report seems like we did about the same as last year,” Lamoureux said. “I know a ton of people were without power so it was great to see so many supporters come out. Our kids did a great job as ambassadors of the music department and some of them made out very well with the student account rewards and sales incentives.”

The tireless band leader, who along with Gingras and Oliver Reid has JHS among the top music departments in the state, said, “Whatever the final report looks like, we are a bit closer to take care of the music department kids.”

Lamoureux was referring to the fact that any money the JHS Music Department Association raises is used to help fund a trip to the highly-acclaimed national competition in Virginia as well as college scholarships for participating Panther musicians.
