JHS movie night a blockbuster

The successes continue to pile up for the 2017-18 Johnston High School Student Council.

Although the five-member student council has its hands full with the historic 50th Anniversary Celebration of Homecoming, Faculty Advisor Greg Russo’s group held JHS’ first-ever Movie Night last Thursday evening inside Mayor Joseph M. Polisena Stadium.

Nearly 200 people showed up to watch Beauty and The Beast, a highly-acclaimed Disney film on a huge screen that was set up on the Panthers home side of Polisena Stadium.

The JHS Student Council rented a huge inflatable screen from Entertainment Under the Stars, a company out of Cranston that has the capability of presenting movies at outdoor venues.

“Movie Night was a huge success,” Russo reported while noting that food trucks were also a big hit with young and old alike. “The response to the entire evening was very positive; the kids kept asking when we are having another one.”

Likewise, “the weather was great, ” said Russo while issuing a thank you to Serena Simone who donated an actual beast costume and character.”

Russo, though, didn’t say whether or not another movie night will be held, but judging from the enthusiasm the unique event generated, chances are the student-oriented group just might consider a similar event in the spring.

CLASS BATTLE

Russo also announced that the annual Battle of the Classes, which has become a tradition on Cherry Hill, especially in recent years, will be staged on Tuesday evening, Oct. 10 beginning at 6 o’clock inside Polisena Stadium that’s located adjacent to JHS. The rain date is Thursday, Oct. 12.

“It’s almost like the Battle of the Classes is a Rite of Fall,” Russo said. “The students look forward to this event every year and it’s always fun and builds excitement for Homecoming.”

For 49 consecutive years JHS has held a Homecoming featuring another battle of the classes, the annual Float Competition that Russo said should be something extra special this time around noting that it will be the school’s 50th anniversary of the fun-filled event.

QUEEN CALL

Russo also announced that the Student Council has located approximately 20 former Homecoming Queens and that “everyone is hoping we get all former 49 queens to come that day.”

Homecoming 2017 is set for Saturday, Oct. 21 and will feature the annual parade, alumni breakfast, dance, football game and crowning of the King and Queen. Anyone knowing the whereabouts to former Queens should call Russo at (401) 225-9338.
