JHS midterms begin this week

Posted

On Thursday, January 18, midterms will start for students at Johnston Senior High School. The exams officially begin fifteen minutes after the student first enters the

Building. Fifteen minutes would allow enough time for announcements, preparation, the passing out of the exams, and a safeguard for any student running late.

Coordinating with their schedules, most students will have different tests depending on the subject, and the type of course they enlisted in (College Prep, Honors, AP, EEP) Thursday will have two tests, each an hour and a half long, on the subjects that the students have on levels One and Two on Day One.

On Friday, the tests will be on the subjects during levels Three and Four, Monday on levels Five and Six, and finally Tuesday, which focuses on level seven and makeups for any of the previous days. These makeup tests are the only opportunity that students will be able to make up midterms, and if they fail to make-up a missed exam, their grade will drop drastically.

Midterms count for 20 percent of the semester (1) grade, and count for 10 percent of the students’ final grade. Final exams will take place at the end of the year, and count similarly to the midterm exams. However, if any senior has above a 90 average in any their classes, they are not required to take midterms, and they wouldn’t receive any repercussions.

Typically, midterms would have started on Tuesday, January 16, but due to two days of snow cancellations, the midterms were delayed. Last week, a malfunction in the heating system sent students home, which could have pushed back midterms once again. However, the midterms were not pushed, and the dates were finalized.

Altogether, the midterms are quite significant toward the graduation and success of a student. Each exam focuses on the information that the student learned during the first two quarters, and gauge how much the student knows about the subject. Most students regard the midterms as tortuous, but students get to leave school after both tests are completed, usually at 11:30 a.m.
