JHS marks Valentine's with Hoops for Heart

Posted

Valentine’s Day, a celebration often symbolized by hearts, has a much more important meaning – heart health – among students at Johnston Senior High School.

In order to raise money for the American Heart Association, an organization which aims to fund research for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, students participate in a “Hoops for Heart” fundraising event in the gymnasium of the high school each Valentine’s Day.

Run by the Students Against Dangerous Decisions, or SADD, club, students are excused from their first three periods of the day in order to attend the event, which consists of several enjoyable activities in order to promote healthy exercise habits while raising money for a cause that affects countless amounts of people.

The only requirement to participate is for each student to donate $20, which can amount to around $3,000 raised. SADD then donates this money to the American Heart Association at the conclusion of the event.
