JHS set for HOF golf tourney

It’s a tradition unlike any other on Cherry Hill.

It’s officially named the Johnston High School Athletic Hall of Fame-Gary V. Mazzie Memorial Golf Tournament.

It’s held every July, and the date is Monday, July 1 this time around, and will again be played at picturesque Glocester Country Club that’s located off Route 44.

However, this is much more than an average golf tournament designed to raise funds to help sustain the prestigious JHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

It’s a terrific tribute, people like JHS baseball legends Dave Pisaturo, Scott Moore, Ed Skovron and Mel Steppo will readily attest, to a mighty man who founded the Panthers Athletic Hall of Fame back on June 17, 2011.

Moreover, it’s a promise of sorts that tourney chairman Jim Hopkins – a former teacher-coach at JHS – made when Gary Victor Mazzie succumbed to a battle with cancer back on Oct. 1, 2015, and that was to never, ever, let his best friend’s name be forgotten.

“Gary was a renaissance man,” said Hopkins, his voice cracking with emotions. “We all work real, real hard to make his golf tournament an overwhelming success and sustain the Athletic Hall of Fame – and everything he did for Panther athletes during a brilliant 40-year career.”

So, the Panthers baseball legends listed above – as well as many former JHS athletes as well as some area businessmen and women – will tee it up on Monday, July 1 at 12:30 p.m. after sampling another terrific Johnston tradition, a.k.a. those famed pizza chips that Don DePetrillo of The Original Italian Bakery will donate for the check-in and registration.

The July 1 tourney, the fourth annual since Mazzie’s passing, will have many firsts.

“We’ll have a championship trophy with each year’s winners engraved on it,” Hopkins announced. “Each player will receive a complimentary travel bag with the JHS HOF-Gary V. Mazzie Memorial logo on it.”

Likewise, the 18-hole event will feature the traditional and fun-filled post-golf dinner.

“We’ll also have a silent auction featuring celebrity jerseys and autographed pictures,” Hopkins announced. “There will also be bidding for foursomes to play at some of Rhode Island’s most private golf courses. It should be a great day.”

Entry fee is $110 per player and sponsorships for tee signs, which are still available, are $100 each. Proceeds will again help to sustain the annual JHS Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner that held in October. For entry or more information please contact Hopkins at cocahjhop@gmail.com.
