GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc., a leading multi-disciplinary firm providing geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water and construction management services, has received a prestigious Environmental Business Council of New England award for its work on Citizens Bank’s new headquarters complex in Johnston.

GZA was honored as a key team member for the EBC’s “James D.P. Farrell Award for Brownfields Remediation Project of the Year” at the council’s 26th EBEE Awards Presentation on June 19. The project was nominated to receive the award by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

The $285 million Citizens Bank headquarters complex project included the remediation and reuse of a closed brownfields landfill site as part of the development of a state-of-the-art corporate campus with 425,000-square feet of new buildings, structured parking, athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, and 60 acres of preserved space with walking trails and stormwater systems that protect wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas. The campus opened in August 2018 for 2,800 Citizens Bank staff who moved in over a 10-week period.

GZA provided services including environmental site investigation, remedial design and oversight, geotechnical design and construction monitoring as part of a team of site and civil engineers, architects and contractors.

GZA CEO Patrick Sheehan said: “From removing 50,000 tons of solid waste from the disused landfill to sensitively reshaping and beautifying 123 acres of land, the Citizens Bank headquarters project is one of the greatest brownfields redevelopment success stories in Rhode Island’s history. As the largest environmental engineering firm in Rhode Island with a long history of integrating environmental cleanups with beneficial site reuse and redevelopment, GZA is deeply honored to be recognized for our role in this project working as part of a diverse and talented team.”

GZA Providence District Office Manager Ed Summerly said: “Completing this project required cooperation with multiple regulatory agencies at the town, state, and federal levels. Citizens Bank showed remarkable vision and leadership in seeing this Site for what it could be and then coordinating GZA and all the other environmental, engineering, and construction contractors to get this project completed in just 26 months from first construction permits to first employees moving in.”

In addition to GZA, other companies recognized by EBC’s Farrell Award for their roles on the Citizens Bank project include DiPrete Engineering, Hoffman Engineering, Pare Corporation , Beta Group, Elkus Manfredi Architects, CRJA-IBI Group, BR A, and McNamara Salvia. Cushman and Wakefield represented Citizens Bank as the owner’s project manager, Premier Development handled site work, Dimeo Construction Company constructed the building, and DiGregorio Corporation oversaw site grading and landfill excavation.

GZA is a multi-disciplinary, employee-owned firm providing Geotechnical, Environmental, Ecological, Water and Construction Management services. GZA’s more than 700 professionals are based in 31 offices in New England, the Mid-Atlantic and the Great Lakes States. Its corporate headquarters are located in Norwood, Massachusetts.
