Growing up wild

The Thornton Summer Learning Program hosted a celebration of its’ students efforts in “Growing Up Wild,” a collaboration of Johnston Public Schools and United Way.

“Growing Up Wild” is described as a “nationally renowned early childhood education program that develops a positive attitude toward nature and the environment,” as well as using hands-on learning and offering chances for social interaction, teamwork and home-school connections.

Students promoted the Marian J. Mohr Library as a “valued community resource” and created a public service announcement and other projects that required critical thinking, creativity and academic learning. They also used several forms of technology, including a Go Noodle for movement breaks and Smart TVs.

Lisa Filippelli-Moan and Paula Creamer led the program, while Superintendent Bernard DiLullo, Assistant Superintendent Julie-anne Zarrella and School Committee Chairman Bob LaFazia attended the presentation. (Submitted photos)
