Grid Iron Golf Tourney raises 4k

The undergraduates who’ll represent Johnston High School in Rhode Island Interscholastic League football this fall received what Gina Schino called “some super special support from one of the most spirited community events I’ve ever seen.”

It was an event entitled the 2nd Annual Grid Iron Golf Tournament that teed off Sunday at Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence with 62 golfers, 28 hole sponsors and raised $4,000 that will directly benefit the Johnston High School football Panthers.

“This was a classic example of spirit unlimited,” said Schino, the first-year incoming president of the Panthers Grid Iron Club. “Walgreens donated raffle prizes, Price Rite and Stop & Shop gave us gift cards and Don DePatrillo of the Original Italian Bakery donated enough pizza for the golfers as well as gift cards. The day was fantastic.”

In the middle of it all, Schino wanted it known, was Brandon Parillo, the Panthers offensive football coordinator who founded the tourney a year ago and was the driving force behind Sunday’s success story.

“Brandon worked so hard to make this tournament successful,” Schino went on. “It takes a lot of time, energy and effort to plan such an event. Brandon did a great job. I am enjoying being a Grid Iron member and working with an amazing group of coaches: Joe Acciardo, Brandon, Matt Velino and Joe Ceraldi. They all have amazing energy and talent.”

Moreover, as Schino – who recently retired, so to speak from her post as Winsor Hill Elementary School PTO president – added, “Each of those coaches is committed to making the JHS football program successful.”

Likewise, Schino heaped words of praise upon Sue Parillo, Brandon’s mother, who is the Health and Physical Education teacher at Winsor Hill who doubles as head coach of the champion JHS cheerleading program.

“I am thankful to Sue and the cheerleaders for always going above and beyond to support the team,” said Schino. “Also, a huge thank you our football players who volunteered their time at the tournament.”

She also issued a heartfelt thank you to all the sponsors and golfers for their support while emphasizing “their generosity will contribute greatly to many enhancements needed for our football program.”

The Rubino foursome, which included Joe Rubino, Kevin Lanouette, Joe Jennings and Doug Corsetti won the tourney championship while Kyle Lepresti took longest drive honors and Jeffery Oklowitcz won closest the pin honors.

The tourney sponsors were: CP Home Improvement, FMG Costantini & Son Inc, ReBath, Colucci family, Friend of Deb Fellela, Classic Express Café, GMARCO, Revival Brewing Co., Dimitri Law Office, Innovex, Johnston Police and Fire Departments, Northeast Auto Body, Mario Susi Realty, Perfect Puppy, Broadway Real Estate Group, Bar 101, Rep. Steve Ucci and Kenny’s Barbershop.

Also, Enerje, Catanzaro Painting, Anthony DeMarco & Family, Eastland Foods, Wicked Fresh Café, JYSA, JAS and Spirito's Restaurant.
