Girls on the Run Rhode Island host 5k event on May 21

Girls on the Run Rhode Island will host its annual 5K on May 21 at Colt State Park. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in 3 rd to 8th grade. During the ten-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for an end-of-season celebratory 5K.

Participation in the 5K on May 21 is open to the public and all proceeds from the event will benefit Girls on the Run Rhode Island. The 5K is a certified flat course that winds through Colt State Park and finishes along the water. The 1-Mile Family Fun Run is perfect for all ages and starts and finishes along the bay. Last season ’s 5K brought together over 800 participants including program participants, their family and friends and community members. 5K registration cost is $32 and includes an event race shirt. 1-Mile Family Fun Run is

$16 and all youth finishers will receive a finisher medal at the finish line. Day of registration prices will increase.

Packet pick up will be on race day at Colt State Park starting at 8AM. The 1-Mile Family Fun Run will start at 9AM

and the 5K will start at 10AM. The event will open at 8AM on May 21 at Colt State Park and early arrival is

Girls on the Run is a national physical activity-based positive youth development program for 3 rd -8th grade girls. Participants develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The ten-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5k event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Girls on the Run has served over 1.2 million girls since its inception in 1996.
