Free training on how to prevent, mitigate, manage opioid use

Posted

Westerly Education Center is hosting three training sessions on strategies to prevent, mitigate and manage opioid use, appropriate for mental health professionals and paraprofessionals who interact frequently with at-risk populations.

The trainings are free but registration is required. Behavioral Health: Substance Use and Mental Health will be held October 31, November 4 and 18. Frameworks for Professional Practice will be offered November 21 and 25 and December 2. Strategies: Professional Practice & Treatment will be held on December 5, 9 and 19. The four-hour sessions are available from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., or 4 to 8 p.m. All trainings will be held at Westerly Education Center, 23 Friendship Street, Westerly. Go to www.westerlyedcenter.org for details on dates, times and registration.

The instructor for the courses is Pamela Messore, MSW, LICSW, LCDP, CAADC, a skilled clinician and educator with more than 25 years of behavioral health experience in residential, schools and outpatient programs in Providence and Woonsocket, helping Rhode Islanders of all ages. She’s a frequent lecturer on mental health and substance use for behavioral health professionals, nurses, teachers and parents. In 2010, she was recognized as the 2010 RI-NASW Social Worker of the Year in Addictions.

Opioid use is the leading cause of accidental death in Rhode Island. Last year, 314 Rhode Islanders died of accidental drug overdoses, and the CDC reports that 130 Americans every day suffer fatal drug overdoses involving opioids.

The free trainings are made possible by a grant of the State Opioid Response/South County, South County Prevention Coalition, and Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities & Hospitals. Other partners include Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner’s Westerly Education Center, and Rhode Island College Institute for Education in Healthcare.
