Fantastic ‘Phantom’ at PPAC through Sunday

Posted

The “reimagined” version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is still playing to sell-out audiences across the country, including their extended run through Sunday at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

We saw it last weekend for the third time and are still thrilled by the beautiful, haunting music and the elaborate sets. We missed the huge staircase at the opening of the second act, but enjoyed the new mirrored set and the lovely “Masquerade.”

Cameron Mackintosh’s new production carries a 52-piece orchestra and some of the finest voices you will ever hear.

Quentin Oliver Lee makes an overpowering Phantom, with his stature (6’7”) and magnificent voice, joined by Eva Tavares as Christine, in contrast with Lee at 5’2” but with a voice matching the quality of Lee’s.

The pyrotechnics are there (We could feel the heat from row P) and you will swear that the gondola is floating on water in the phantom’s lair. And then there’s that chandelier!

I still get goose bumps when I hear “The Music of the Night” and “All I Ask of You,” brilliantly sung by the principals, who are backed by excellent operatic quality singers.

You still have time to see it, whether for the first, second or third time. Call 421-ARTS for reservations.
