ECC hauls in $200 for epilepsy awareness

There was more than one reason why everyone from Principal Keri Autiello and second-grade teacher Jennifer Ramage to a host of students at Johnston’s Early Childhood Center were decked out in a variety of purple colored garb last Friday.

It was Epilepsy Day, and the ECC held a Dress Down Day to raise money as well as awareness. The ECC community raised more than $200.

“Our great staff and many, many students donated one dollar – and in some cases event more – to the Epilepsy Foundation of New England [in Lowell, Massachusetts],” said Ramage, who serves as coordinator for the Feinstein Foundation Good Deeds program.

Ramage also announced that Gianna Halliwell – a former ECC student and the daughter of ECC staff member Kim Halliwell – was the inspiration behind the Epilepsy Purple Dress Down Day. She has epilepsy, “but thankfully she has been healthy for the past few years.”

Ramage said epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness or convulsions associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

She also noted that many schools host fundraising programs and encouraged others to hold similar events such as road races and walks. For more information, contact Christina Vilardi, Rhode Island field manager, at (617) 506-6041, ext. 118, or cvilardi@epilepsynewengland.org.
