It didn’t take long for Johnston’s Jayme DeCesare to make her mark in the highly-competitive world of NCAA Division I women’s college basketball.

After leading La Salle Academy to three Rhode Island Interscholastic League state championships and landing All-State and MVP honors, DeCesare took her game to Merrimack College in North Andover, Ma. and just last week was voted the Northeast Conference Co-Rookie of the Week

“Jayme has become an important part of our team,” said Michael Sullivan, Associate Director of Athletics/Communications told the Sun Rise earlier this week. “She is the only freshmen to have started all 23 games.”

Last week, the daughter of David and Joann DeCesare scored a career-high 19 points in Merrimack’s 80-54 win over St. Francis of Brooklyn and was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range. The Warriors came out on fire and DeCesare canned 12 of her 19 points – including three 3’s – in a 19-4 run.

Earlier this season, DeCesare was ranked number two in the country in assists to turnovers ratio and to date has dished out a team high 77 for the now 14-8 Warriors of Head Coach Monique LeBlanc.

DeCesare, who is the Warriors cat-quick point guard, is averaging 10 points per game and a team-high 3.5 assists. She also leads the Warriors freshman in minutes played this season with 697 for an average of 28.4 per game. She has also made 25 steals and has also chipped in with 57 rebounds, 44 of which have come on the defensive end.
