Council honors Sydney DeCesare

To say that Johnston Town Councilman Richard J. DelFino III takes pride in honoring District I residents for their extraordinary achievements would be an under statement.

Take Noel Acciari, for example. Almost as soon as Providence College’s hockey Friars won the NCAA National Champions and Acciari was drafted by the Boston Bruins, DelFino invited the former Bishop Hendricken High School super star to a Town Council meeting where the entire five-member governing body honored the now seasoned NHL standout.

Monday night was yet another example of the pride DelFino places in all District I residents.

“Tonight we honor a great student athlete whose individual success contributed greatly to the Salve Regina University women’s cross country team enjoying newfound success in the NCAA regional meet,” DelFino said while introducing Sydney DeCesare. “She exemplifies the hard work it takes to be successful on the course and in the classroom.”

DelFino then told an overflow crowd inside the Johnston Municipal Courthouse how DeCesare earned Salve Regina’s Rookie of the Year Cross Country Award and just recently was named to the Newport based college’s prestigious Dean’s List.

“We wish Sydney continued success in academics and athletics,” DelFino said. “On behalf of the Johnston Town Council, we congratulate her on earning this great Rookie of the Year Award.”

DelFino then presented DeCesare with a Town of Johnston official citation that read, in part: “In recognition of you becoming Salve Regina’s Cross Country Rookie of the Year. We congratulate you for your achievement and express the hope for continued success.”

The citation included the official town seal as well as the signature of all five Johnston Town Council members.

DeCesare was accompanied by her father and mother, David and Jo-Ann DeCesare, her sister Jayme who is a standout basketball player at La Salle Academy and her grandparents John and Annette Rainone.

The honor is also an extension of DelFino’s ongoing effort to honor the wonderful works District I residents like basketball star Justin Mazzulla, the St. Rocco State Basketball Champions, St. Brigid’s Parish on its 100th Anniversary, Emma Salzillo on win the title Miss Pre-Ten USA Italia and Monday night DeCesare “for all achieving something special and making our community proud.”
