Contractor gives police HQ a fresh look

In an unusual twist of events, the town of Johnston recently received an extraordinary donation that was the direct result of an inquiry by Police Maj. Frank J. Levesque.

Not that long ago, Levesque needed some work done at his home. Like any good detective, he did some investigating to find the best possible painting company.

Levesque learned through several referrals that LOPCO Contracting of Providence was “professional, personable and particular” when it comes to painting, so he called owner Thomas J. Lopatosky Jr. and set up a meeting.

Soon thereafter, LOPCO staff was at Levesque’s home and doing what he called “a superb job that couldn’t have been better.”

One day, while LOPCO staffers were working at Levesque’s home, he spoke with Lopatosky and asked if his company did any community service work.

“Yes we do,” Lopatosky answered. “We pride ourselves in helping non-profits.”

One in particular, Levesque remembers, is the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, which has hired freelance artist and educator Brent Bachelder to complete a 281-foot mural for the Fred Lippitt Woonasquatucket River Greenway.

That mural, Levesque learned, was funded by Dominion Energy, LOPCO Contracting, the State Council on the Arts, and Sherwin Williams.

Thus, Levesque set up a meeting with Police Chief Richard S. Tamburini, and soon thereafter, LOPCO staffers were working around the entire exterior of police headquarters off Atwood Avenue.

After two weeks, a staff of five LOPCO employees had given the headquarters a refreshing new look.

“Everyone was impressed with their work,” Levesque said. “Those men scrapped and sanded the entire wooded portion of this building’s exterior. They primed all the necessary areas, then painted it, and what a difference that has made. All the workers were great representatives of Tom’s company.”

Earlier this week, Tamburini summoned Lopatosky to headquarters for a special “thank you” meeting that included Mayor Joseph Polisena and Levesque.

“This is great stuff Tom and his company did for us,” Tamburini said. “On behalf of the entire Johnston Police Department, I want to express personal and collective thanks to the wonderful people of LOPCO Contracting and Painting. It’s a pleasure on behalf of the mayor and myself to thank the professional team of LOPCO for the super job they on the exterior to this building.”

Tamburini presented Lopatosky with a special citation and official Johnston police hat, and added: “We can’t thank you enough for refurbishing the trim and all your work at no expense to the town.”

Polisena, meanwhile, extended his hand to Lopatosky and said: “This was very generous of you. We really appreciate your work on this building very, very much. I can’t tell you how much this means. Painting the trim on a building like this is something you don’t think about budgeting. This is absolutely beautiful. Your guys did a super, super special job.”

LOPCO Contracting is located at 67 Seymour St. in Providence. Lopatosky can be reached at 270-2664.
