Coffee, conversation, cuisine & cinema at Acoustic Java

Dave Fullerton considers himself, first and foremost, a brew master. He has been brewing coffee since September when he moved into the space at 204 South Main St., Providence, formerly occupied by Cable Car Cinema.

Dave offers a full range of sustainable Fair Trade, Organic, Bird Friendly and Rain Forest Alliance coffees, working directly with farmers and their families to bring customers a variety of high-scoring microlot and estate coffees.

“We are a coffee forward café,” he said, “and yet we also feature a well-rounded café menu made in a tight, scratch kitchen with local and organic ingredients whenever possible.”

The café is open Sunday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m. Breakfast croissants ($4.75), burritos ($7) and bagels ($3.50-$9) are popular, along with other items and pastries from 7 Stars Bakery and Providence Bagels.

Sandwiches are served on artisan bread from 7 Stars and include toasted cheese (7), Avocado P.L.T ($10) and California Prosciutto ($10.25), Small plates of salmon crostini, hummus & veggies, bread pudding and brownie affogato also make up the eclectic menu.

“Our mission is to create a welcome environment where you will find tranquility, sociability and the right combination of the best coffee and fast casual food offerings in town,” Fullerton said.

They are now serving fine wine and craft beer.

The coffee and cuisine encourage conversation, as do the movies that are being shown in the intimate microcinema, where you can sit at a table, cushioned chair or couch and enjoy unlimited popcorn ($3.) Currently showing onscreen is Color Out of Space, the story of cosmic terror inspired by Providence’s own H.P. Lovecraft’s short story and starring Nicholas Cage. We watched the film about a family that moves to an alpaca farm in rural New England when a meteorite crashes in their front yard, infecting the land and causing strange events. The photography is both bucolic and psychedelic, as you would expect from Lovecraft, and the acting is eerie, as you would expect from Cage.

After the film, Fullerton showed a Q and A that was conducted in Los Angeles with the actors and director, following his goal to provide conversation.
