Citizens Police Academy participants have a blast at shooting range

At approximately 8:30 p.m. last Wednesday evening, Jessica Alviano removed her safety glasses and ear protection and quickly received a high-five from Teri Rozzero.

“She’s a natural shooter!” exclaimed Johnston Police Detective Jim Seymour as he offered congratulations to Alviano. “Her positioning and stance were perfect; she was right on the target.”

Meanwhile, Capt. Chris Correia offered similar compliments to the mother-and-daughter tandem of Julie and Cara Giorgio, who demonstrated confidence during their turn firing a weapon.

The four women – along with 11 other area residents – were wrapping up the eighth week of the Citizens Police Academy, which last Wednesday evening involved a firearms safety lesson as well as shooting practice at the Johnston Police Department’s range.

The evening class began when Correia, as well as Seymour, offered classroom instruction on firearms safety using an actual pistol and a huge television monitor that’s mounted on the wall in the Police Department’s roll call room.

“We covered firearms safety, pistol nomenclature, function and handling,” Correia said. “They were also given hands-on instruction in the range prior to shooting.”

With the emphasis on safety, Correia and Seymour limited the actual shooting to four participants at a time.

“Everyone was very interested and attentive to the training regardless of their experience level,” Correia said. “All the participants were supportive and complimentary of one another in the respective groups they were working in and they greatly appreciated the opportunity of actually shooting in the range.”

Seymour added: “There was some nervous excitement to begin with, but once the actual shooting was about to begin, they were receptive to our instruction and it quickly subsided. All the participants did very well and said they really enjoyed the experience.”
