Cerel to perform at The Arctic Playhouse Theater

To say that Sandy Cerel loves the stage would be an understatement.

For starters, the Johnston resident has been acting and directing for 35 years and has worked with a great number of theater companies throughout Southern New England during that time.

For many years, she was active with the highly-acclaimed Kaleidoscope Theatre and in the late 1970s and early 1980s she was cast in several of their television programs on WPRI-12.

Cerel’s vast experience even includes touring with the company to dozens of venues from the once famed Warwick Musical Theatre and Melody Tent in Cape Cod, the Arctic Playhouse Theatre as well as performing in the Day Dream Theater, Epic Theater Company, Academy Players and more.

This weekend, Cerel will be appearing live on stage inside The Arctic Playhouse Theater, located at 117 Washington St. in West Warwick, in the Drama Desk and Tony Award winning play “On Golden Pond” by Ernest Thompson.

However, Cerel is doing much more than just playing the part of Ethel Thayer during the humor-filled and touching play that tells the love story of a couple (Ethel and Norman Thayer) who return to their summer home in Maine for the 48th year.

Cerel is co-directing the production with Christopher Margadonna of Pawtucket.

According to the Arctic Playhouse website, the tale plays out like this: “As the story about ‘On Golden Pond’ goes, despite having heart palpitations and a failing memory, Norman Thayer (Terry Simpson) is still tart-tongued and observant as ever. Ethel (Cerel) is his perfect foil, delighting in all the small things that enrich their life together.”

In the play, “Ethel and Norman visit their divorced daughter with her fiancé and his son in tow. The boy quickly becomes the ‘grandchild’ that Norman and Ethel have longed for.”

Cerel is excited about her upcoming role to be on stage by Terry Simpson of Kingston, Ethan Clare of Seekonk, Steven Dulude of Pawtucket, Cherylee Dumas and Christopher Verteger of Narragansett.

“I’m delighted to be at The Arctic Playhouse,” Cerel told the Sun Rises earlier this week, noting she recently directed Einstein and the Polar Bear and The Dining Room. “I want to thank Jim, Lloyd and David for this wonderful opportunity.”

Cerel, who has been thrust into roles as Kate in Brighton Beach Memories and Brenda in Smokey Joe’s Café and has even appeared on MTV in The Bad Rap episode of High School Stories, also said: “I want to express my sincere appreciation to Christopher and Eileen and to this exceptional cast for a most rewarding and memorable experience. As always, I am also grateful to my husband Lon for his loving support.”

The stage manager is Eileen Goretaya of West Warwick and “On Golden Pond” will be at The Arctic Playhouse Theatre this Friday and Saturday – Sept. 29 and 30 – with the curtain going up at 8 p.m. Other evening performances are scheduled for Oct. 6, 7, 12 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1, 8.

Advance tickets are on sale for $13 and on show nights admission is $18. For complete ticket information please call (401) 573-3443.

The play was absolutely amazing! Sandy Cerel, Terry Simpson and the whole cast were excellent., Arctic Playhouse is a great venue and the house was great Friday night.

Quick correction: The part of Billy Ray is played by Ethan Clarke from Seekonk, MA. He was great!
