Nothing says “summer” quite like a good-old-fashioned hotdog or juicy hamburger, searing on a hot grill. The tantalizing aroma, the sizzling sound and the enticing sight of those tasty emblems of Americana just make you happy . . . and leave you longing for the carefree days of summer when all it takes is the simple things to make one happy.

Making people happy is what makes Stephen Waldeck, the owner of Buddy’s Diner in Johnston, the happiest of all. For the past thirty years, he has brought happiness to literally hundreds of customers, stretching from Florida to Maine, by serving them such classic foods as hotdogs, hamburgers, steak and sausage & pepper sandwiches ~ all fresh off a burning hot grill.

Over all these years, Stephen Waldeck has covered the whole gamut of food service, from fine dining to the kind of fare he is serving now every day at Buddy’s Diner, his carnival-style booth on Atwood Avenue. Whether he is preparing a meal at a swanky club on the east side of Providence or passing a delighted customer a platter of onion rings through the window of his booth, he is most at home when bringing joy to others through his food.

Waldeck’s “Buddy’s Diner” is the newest hotspot to hit the streets of Johnston. Located on the corner of Atwood Avenue and Simmonsville Avenue, this booth is part of a whole fleet of other Waldeck-owned booths that locals might recognize from various fairs and locations throughout the state.

This booth, with is colorful exterior and American flags billowing in the breeze, is famous for its Sausage and Onion sandwiches (a crusty roll piled high with fresh veggies and Italian sausage) cooked right in front of you. The Buffalo chicken wings, seasoned fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings & mozzarella sticks are crowd-pleasers as well, second only to the delicately fried chicken fingers or Philly cheesesteak, pastrami/corned beef and pastrami/cheese sandwiches. There is even a “Veggie Burger” on the menu! Watch for the soon-to-be-included addition to the list of offerings here, the ever-popular New York weiners! Everything here is fresh and cooked-to-order! This is all you could want to satisfy those summertime cravings.

While Buddy’s Diner is a stationary booth, Stephen Waldeck’s trucks can be seen across the region, especially at fairs and special events. Fans of the food served here can also sign up for birthday parties and catered events ~ there is even an option for pizza ~ perfect for any occasion that will leave your guests talking for days.

Come visit Buddy’s Diner, located on Atwood Avenue across the street from Jimmy’s Service Center on the corner of Simmonsville Ave. The booth is open every day, seven days a week from 11:00am until 5:00pm, though watch for extended hours as summer approaches.
