Briarcliffe Gardens A State-of-the-Art Memory Care Assisted Living Residence

Posted

The soft rhythmic voice of yoga instructor Christina Geruso rises above the quiet of an early afternoon at Briarcliffe Gardens. Christina, who owns the nearby studio of Joyful Bliss Yoga, is leading a roomful of residents through a series of modified yoga moves. She gently guides each resident through some heart-pumping gestures: “Big breath in…now wiggle your fingers…feel rooted to the earth… sit up tall and nice, think of someone you love and send them straight to your heart center.” With just a little prompting, the group follows along!

To their “heart center” is where Christina is trying to send the thoughts and minds of Briarcliffe residents, all of whom live with varying degrees of memory loss. Christina has a special way of connecting with the men and women who regularly attend her weekly classes; she is energetic but also patient, gentle and soothing. She lifts their hearts while also aiming to tap into memories and thoughts that many may feel have long since left them.

The residents of Briarcliffe who attend these classes are stimulated and engaged while also being calmed and relaxed. Yoga is known to reduce agitation and irritability, and this provides a great benefit to those with Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia and other memory impairments. The practice of yoga is known to help improve overall health and happiness, thereby promoting a sense of well-being and connection with the world.

At Briarcliffe Gardens, classes such as Christina’s yoga class and the Tai Chi classes which are regularly held here are considered essential and integral to the daily living activities of the many residents who live here. They are part of Briarcliffe’s overall goal of nurturing, supporting and enriching the lives of its residents ~ minds, bodies, hearts and souls.

Everything about the living environment at Briarcliffe Gardens is intentionally designed to do just this, to enhance the lives of its residents ~ and to bring genuine reassurance to their family members. When Briarcliffe’s CEO, Akshay Talwar designed this unique Memory Care Residence, he took extraordinary measures to make this residence special, different. . . better. It is his singular purpose to make this care facility the best it can be.
