Barnes students become entrepreneurs at Flea Market

Posted

The students at Sarah Dyer Barnes Elementary got a firsthand lesson in consumerism with their recently held Flea Market.

In their social studies classes, students have learned all about the economy, discussed wants and needs, goods and services, supply and demand, producers and consumers, and much more. Students have also been earning an income for various jobs around their classrooms.

As a culminating activity, the students worked together to hold a flea market. There, students were allowed to become their own entrepreneurs by deciding on a good to produce, creating the product, and advertising and selling those products during the event.

Students were provided with a list of possible choices for goods, or could choose their own. They were expected to make a minimum of 10 items to sell at their booth. While no students became millionaires, they learned valuable lessons they can hold on to for a lifetime.
