Average cost of gas down 2 cents

Gasoline prices in Rhode Island are down two cents this week, according to AAA Northeast.

AAA’s August 5 survey of prices in Rhode Island finds self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.71 per gallon. Rhode Island’s price is the same as the national average for regular unleaded. A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was seventeen cents higher at $2.88.

“Prices are cheaper as demand saw a small dip on the week, even though overall demand remains robust for the summer,” said Diana Imondi, AAA Northeast Manager of Public Affairs & Traffic Safety. “Most states have seen cheaper pump prices of a few pennies and motorists can expect this trend to continue through the first part of August.”

The range in prices in the latest AAA survey for unleaded regular is 30 cents, from a low of $2.59 to a high of $2.89.
