Athletic Hall of Fame searching for candidates


Although no official date has been set for the induction ceremony and dinner for the Johnston High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Review Committee is already looking for candidates for the Class of 2013.

“We’re beginning our search early in hopes of finding the best possible candidates for our growing Hall of Fame,” said Hall of Fame Chairman and founder Gary Mazzie.

Mazzie, who is also the co-director of Athletics at Johnston High with Ed DiSimone, said there are two categories his committee considers for induction into the Hall of Fame: one for athletes and another for coaches.

In order for an athlete to be considered, he or she must have graduated from JHS and, of special importance, there will be an automatic five-year waiting period after a student’s graduation before he or she can be considered.

The only exception may be made for students from other schools that play their entire high school career for Johnston High.

Open nominations are being solicited, and non-athletes may be considered if they made significant contributions to the school’s athletic program. Consideration will also be given for the following achievements: All-State, All-League, participation in multiple sports, and other noteworthy awards or achievements. The athlete’s entire body of work will be reviewed and discussed by the committee.

In the coaches category, there are five different criteria that each candidate must meet. They are: recognition as “Coach of the Year” by Coaches Associations or League; state championship(s); longevity; contributions to the athletic department and the school; or other awards and achievements.

Hall of Fame nomination forms are available at Mazzie’s office, which is located inside JHS, just a few doors down from the lobby of the Edward L. DiSimone Gymnasium lobby. Forms are also available from any of the nine JHS Athletic Hall of Fame committee members. People may request forms by sending an email to Mazzie at or calling him at 233-1920 ext. 2123.

The committee includes: Steve DeMeo, Margaret “Peg” Guilmette, Richard Hagopian, James Hopkins, Carolyn Thornton Iannuccilli, Alan McGillvray, Ellen Quantmeyer, Zucchi and Mazzie.

While the search for candidates who will make up the 2013 Class is underway, Mazzie announced an ongoing program that raises revenue to help sustain events held in conjunction with the Hall of Fame. JHS alumni, family and friends are invited to honor loved ones with a lasting gift by purchasing bricks for the Panthers’ new Athletic Walk of Fame.

“We’re offering people an opportunity to commemorate a life touched by our school with an engraved brick on the Walk of Fame,” said Mazzie, who explained that the walkway is located at the entrance to the gymnasium. “We encourage people to order a brick for themselves, family or to honor someone special, like a friend, teacher or student.”

The bricks are $50 each and may have up to three lines of text engraved on them. Each line may contain only 15 characters.

All orders should include a check made payable to “JHS Athletic Hall of Fame” and sent to Gary Mazzie, Johnston High School Athletic Director, 345 Cherry Hill Road, Johnston, RI 02919.

The deadline for all brick orders is Aug. 1, 2013.
