A WRINKLE IN TIME

(Sci-fi family film)

Taken from Madeleine L’Engle’s novel and directed by Ava DuVarnay, the supernatural sci-fi “A Wrinkle in Time” certainly has a gentle, mesmerizing. romantic aura to it.
Joyce loved the movie – the colorful, original costumes, the important messages, the cosmic, imaginative special effects, and the excellent acting. While I agree with her on all counts, I found the story to be a bit tedious at times and at other times lacking smooth transitions from one adventure (or planet) to another.
Storm Reid plays Meg, a young girl from a blended family whose father (Chris Pine) has been missing for four years. The scientist, along with his wife, had been studying the universe and its effect on human behavior. Along with her younger brother, Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and new friend Calvin (Levi Miller) they time-travel from one planet to another, aided by three supernatural women, determined to bring him home. Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling play the three overpowering spirits, each with their own powers and personalities.
There are many adventures along the way and dozens of aphorisms are thrown about, reminding children and parents that “love is always there,” “the universe is within all of us” and “we must confront our doubts.”
Storm Reid is wonderful as the young girl filled with doubts of her own worth. Her younger brother, Charles Wallace, got on my nerves a bit as his character became more conflicting.
Much is being written about the movie and the difficulty in adapting it from the book. Hopefully, it will encourage young people to go back and read the book. This is one of those rare family films that should be seen as a family and then discussed afterward.
Rated PG, with nothing to worry about, except trying to explain some of the theories of the universe.
