Valuable volunteers

The Keely Fowler and Victoria Calabro-led Johnston High School cheerleaders had the largest group of volunteers at the recent and successful Pocasset River cleanup. Head coach Susan Parillo’s squad began the morning at Pocasset Field off Spruce Street – located off Plainfield Street behind the Letter Carriers Hall – but spend most of their day clearing and cleaning all kinds of debris from the river behind Walgreens and The Original Italian Bakery. “We felt that was the best place to work,” Fowler said. “After all, the bakery donated pizza for everyone that showed up to the cleanup.” Parillo, meanwhile, added: “I’m extremely proud of my girls; they used this as a community service project.” The entire project was coordinated between the town of Johnston and Pawtuxet River Authority.
