Tree lighting makes Christmas season official

Johnston Senior Center officials and volunteers stand by three Christmas trees that are set up inside the Center’s multi-purpose room.

Ben Haskins had just finished calling numbers for the day’s bingo at the Johnston Senior Center. Moments later, Executive Director Anthony Zompa entered the multi-purpose room and ordered that all lights be turned off, though the late afternoon sunshine still cast a ray of light into the room.

A crowd of roughly 60 people sat quietly.

“We don’t want any competition from Rockefeller Center. They might have a bigger tree in New York, but we’ve got three trees here,” Zompa said, flipping the switch on the center’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

As guests marveled at the trees that had been decorated by Senior Center staff and volunteers, Assistant Director Millie Santilli and Coordinator Denise Bell served hot cider and cupcakes.

Keeping the holiday spirit going, Trips and Events Coordinator Marie Venditti later boarded the center’s new van for the annual trip to LaSallette Shrine.

“It’s always a fun time,” she said. “What a great tradition; and we’re proud to have three trees.”
