THE BOY NEXT DOOR

(Mean-spirited

stalker movie)

It is often said that January is “garbage time” at the movies. Leading the pile is this mean-spirited, low-brow stalker movie with an incredibly unrealistic plot and some pretty bad acting.

Poor Claire (Jennifer Lopez) is a high school English teacher whose husband (John Corbett) has been cheating on her with his secretary. We knew from the beginning that the movie was incredulous. Who would cheat on Jennifer Lopez?

Nineteen-year-old Noah (Ryan Guzman) moves in next door to help his ailing uncle, showing up to fix Claire’s garage door and befriending her teenage son, a bullied kid with bad allergies/ (Remember that because it plays heavily into the stupid plot.)

Sexual tension immediately shows its ugly head, and before you can blink Claire and Noah are having passionate sex. Bad enough that he’s the boy next door, he is also her son’s friend and her pupil. Doesn’t that spell jail for Claire?

It doesn’t take long for Claire to come to her senses. While her husband is trying to make amends and get back together, Noah is acting very strange and violent, with an unhealthy desire for his neighbor.

This one quickly turns vulgar, ugly and violent as Noah sets out to destroy everyone in sight, leading to a horribly contrived, over-long conclusion in a barn, where Noah gets what’s coming to him and the family walks away with no consequences for Claire’s actions. You’ve got to be kidding!

Rated a big R, with sex, nudity, violence, profanity and no redeeming social values.
