Save the date for Apple Festival

The Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce and Washington Trust present the 29th annual Apple Festival, to be held on Sept. 17-18. Come and enjoy this time-honored tradition in the town of Johnston, featuring family fun, food, music, and shopping. Admission is free.

The Apple Festival draws more than 5,000 people over the weekend and fills Johnston Memorial Park with music, laughter, and the scent of apple pies and great food. Organizers are calling all artists, vendors, and entertainers, as this is an opportunity to showcase your business. There is also a pie-baking contest. Podmoska wins nursing scholarship

Jared Allen Podmoska of Deer Run Trail in Johnston has been awarded a $1,250 nursing scholarship from the CharterCARE Foundation, his second award from the non-profit community foundation.

The 21-year-old will be a junior at Rhode Island College in the fall. In addition to helping the homeless in Providence, Jared has also traveled to rebuild houses in New Orleans and remains committed to caring for others in the community.

Officially formed in June 2014, the CharterCARE Foundation is committed to supporting health and wellness issues throughout the Rhode Island community in concert with established non-profit fundraising practice. Particular areas of interest include nursing and medical education, mental health programs, eldercare, diabetes education and prevention, pediatric oral health, and obesity education and treatment.

St. Brigid’s Anointing of the Sick

St. Brigid's Church, 1231 Plainfield St., Johnston, Nurses and Prayer Shawl Ministry will be sponsoring their quarterly Mass of Anointing on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m.

Handmade shawls, made by the ministry, and blessed by Father Robert Rochon, pastor, will be available for anyone that may need one for themselves or for someone they know who could benefit by having one. Those who are elderly, preparing for surgery, suffering from a chronic illness or experiencing spiritual or emotional pain are welcome to come and join us in our healing prayers that contribute to our well being.

Tri-Town seeks volunteers

Tri-Town Community Center needs volunteers to help with its food distribution program. Hours are the first three Wednesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tri-Town is also looking for people to help relocate the food program to Emanuel Avenue at a date and time to be determined. Background checks are required. Tri-Town will cover the costs for the background checks, and the Health Center is available to conduct physical exams to ensure the fitness of volunteers.

Walk for Animals

The Rhode Island SPCA will host its 14th annual Marvin Memorial Walk for Animals fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. at Goddard State Park in Warwick.

The event will feature a one-mile walk through the beautiful wooded trails of Goddard State Park, dog costume and best pet trick contests, rock climbing wall, vendors, a caricaturist and photographer doing pet portraits, raffles, prizes for top fundraisers, and lunch.

Admission to the event is free. Friendly dogs welcome. All proceeds from the event will go towards helping the homeless animals at the Rhode Island SPCA by providing food, shelter, veterinary care, and a chance for a new home. Please visit rispca.com for more information.

Cruizin’ for a Cause

Every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cruizin’ for a Cause is held at the Denny’s located at 1448 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. Coming up in July, all proceeds benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. There is a $5 donation for each vehicle, and trophies will be awarded. In August, the weekly event will benefit the Endometriosis Foundation of Rhode Island.

Registration now open for Cranston Senior Games

The Cranston Senior Games will be held on Sept. 17 at Cranston High School West beginning at 9 a.m. Everyone 55 years or older is invited to participate. The registration fee is $15, and golf (Sept. 20 through Sept. 22) is $70 per person. Visit the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, 1070 Cranston St., for registration forms.

Computer classes at the Mohr

The Mohr Library in Johnston is a sponsoring site of the Northstar Basic Computer Skills Certificate program. Make an appointment to take a Northstar assessment. Free family movies at Mulligan’s Island

Mulligan’s Island is pleased to announce its family movie series lineup for 2016. Outdoor movies are a refreshing, fun way to spend a summer evening.

The movies will be shown on a big screen at the Mulligan’s Island Event Center, located at 1000 New London Ave. in Cranston.

The center opens one hour prior to show time. Seating is first come, first served. Lawn chairs and blankets are allowed. Please no umbrellas, tents, coolers, food, or drinks. Concessions will be available.

The movie line-up is as follows: “Inside Out” on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7:15 p.m.; “Frozen” on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.; “Zootopia” on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.; and a surprise movie event on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 6:15 p.m.

All movie titles, movie night contests, dates, and times are subject to change and are weather dependent.

Friends of the Mohr Public Library

Members of the Friends plan and run book sales and carry out other fundraising activities to allow Mohr Library to increase services and programs. The Friends welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues, or through volunteering their time. There is an ongoing book sale in the lower level hall across from the meeting room. The Friends also hold larger sales two or three times a year. Great selections at great prices include hard cover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children, and young adults. Most prices range from 25 cents to $2. The Friends are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

Donations of gently used books are appreciated, and can be left at the library’s main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available.

Coloring for Grownups

Every Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mohr Library, you may enjoy a therapeutic, relaxing and enjoyable evening through adult coloring. Many choices of designs including stylized drawings, florals, mandalas along with 100 beautiful markers and 100 colored pencils to choose from. Come early or late: the program is free Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library is located at 1 Memorial Ave, Johnston.

Genealogy Group

The Mohr Library Genealogy Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. Mohr Library has yearly subscriptions to Ancestry and also New England Historical Genealogical Society databases (NEHGS) on all library computers. Mohr Library also publishes a monthly newsletter outlining upcoming program details and includes tips for searching. Former programs include field trips to the State Archive and Swan Point Cemetery, as well as speakers on cemeteries, medallions found on gravestones, how to search for a particular nationality, and much more.

Wine & Dine Extravaganza

On Aug. 27, the MS Dream Center and Accessible RI will hold a Wine & Dine Extravaganza from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.

The event will include entertainment, raffles, a silent auction, and a mystery wine and dine pairing. Tickets are $60 each or 10 for $500, and are tax deductible. To purchase tickets, contact Anne Delsignore at anne@msdreamcenter.org or 401-330-7470.

The MS Dream Center was founded in April 2010 with a mission of engaging all members of the MS community in purposeful activity, while promoting a spirit of camaraderie. The center offers a wide range of activities from support groups and exercise programs to educational seminars and various therapies. The MS Dream Center is located at the Peter T. Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island has announced that the Capital City Café Program’s lunch and evening meals will be provided by Encore Catering beginning Sept. 6. Encore Catering is a full-service catering company located in Warwick that has been in operation since 1978.

The program provides hot, nutritious meals to seniors throughout Providence and Cranston. The program has seven cafés in various locations throughout the city of Providence with one located in Cranston. Dining cafes are open Monday through Friday. All meals meet one-third of the dietary reference intake for seniors and are approved by a registered dietitian.

Tim White to speak at Senior Guild meeting

At the Cranston Senior Guild meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m., at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive in Warwick, investigative reporter Tim White from Channel 12 will speak about fighting fraud and exposing corruption. Tim is the recipient of three New England Emmy Awards for investigative reporting. He was honored for a 2010 series of stories probing government waste in Rhode Island. He won his second Emmy for 2012 coverage of Providence’s troubled pension system. A 2014 probe into a lack of accountability at a local fire district led to his third Emmy honor. After White’s presentation, the Cranston Senior Guild will have a short meeting followed by refreshments and a raffle. All men and women ages 55 years and older are welcome to join. You do not have to live in Cranston. Come meet other seniors and enjoy this organization that was founded in the 1970s. For additional information, call Lois at 401-944-2761.
