Save the date for Apple Fest

The Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce and Washington Trust present the 29th annual Apple Festival, to be held on Sept. 17-18. Come and enjoy this time-honored tradition in the town of Johnston, featuring family fun, food, music, and shopping. Admission is free.

The Apple Festival draws more than 5,000 people over the weekend and fills Johnston Memorial Park with music, laughter, and the scent of apple pies and great food. Organizers are calling all artists, vendors, and entertainers, as this is an opportunity to showcase your business. There is also a pie-baking contest. Despite the continuing efforts of St. Anthony, Patron of lost objects, and the prayerful staff at “A Special Place,” a beautiful Italian rosary remains unclaimed. The crystal heirloom was turned over to store owner Tom Tatro well over a year ago and repaired.

“Since then, we have moved to a new location and related paperwork has gotten lost in the shuffle,” said Tatro, who picked up the rosary from the home of a Johnston woman when responding to a “for sale” ad her husband placed for a television set.

The owner or anyone with information about this matter is encouraged to call the store, located at 719 Front St. in Woonsocket, at 401-597-0950.

“We are desperately seeking and committed to finding the rosary’s rightful owner,” Tatro said.

Tri-Town seeks volunteers

Tri-Town Community Center needs volunteers to help with its food distribution program. Hours are the first three Wednesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tri-Town is also looking for people to help relocate the food program to Emanuel Avenue at a date and time to be determined. Background checks are required. Tri-Town will cover the costs for the background checks, and the Health Center is available to conduct physical exams to ensure the fitness of volunteers.

Wine & Dine Extravaganza

On Aug. 27, the MS Dream Center and Accessible RI will hold a Wine & Dine Extravaganza from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet.

The event will include entertainment, raffles, a silent auction, and a mystery wine and dine pairing. Tickets are $60 each or 10 for $500, and are tax deductible. To purchase tickets, contact Anne Delsignore at anne@msdreamcenter.org or 401-330-7470.

The MS Dream Center was founded in April 2010 with a mission of engaging all members of the MS community in purposeful activity, while promoting a spirit of camaraderie. The center offers a wide range of activities from support groups and exercise programs to educational seminars and various therapies. The MS Dream Center is located at the Peter T. Cruizin’ for a Cause

Every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cruizin’ for a Cause is held at the Denny’s located at 1448 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. Coming up in July, all proceeds benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. There is a $5 donation for each vehicle, and trophies will be awarded. St. Bartholomew Church, located at 297 Laurel Hill Ave. in Providence, will hold its annual Feast & Festival on Friday, Aug. 12 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Italian, American, and Spanish foods will be available for purchase. There will be carnival rides and games for kids. Entertainment will be provided Friday by the Vini Ames Duo, Saturday by Gemini Band, and Sunday by DJ Eddie the Fixer. Golden Crest

Golden Crest Nursing Centre is sponsoring a summer concert series held on the outdoor patio of North Providence Union Free Library, located at 1810 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence. The first concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 17, with Robert Black, New England’s tribute artist. Enjoy music and dancing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Concerts are free and open to the public. Bring your own lawn chairs. Non-alcoholic beverages are allowed. There is plenty of free adjacent parking at North Providence High School. The second concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The “Fabulous” Tony Cerbo, will be performing. There is no rain date. Hot Dog and Beer Festival

The Dillon Council Knights of Columbus, located at 1675 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence, is hosting a Hot Dog and Beer Festival on Friday, Aug. 19, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and are available after Mass or at the parish office, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Holy Family Home will receive 50 percent of the funds raised. Please consider purchasing a ticket. Registration now open for Cranston Senior Games

The Cranston Senior Games will be held on Sept. 17 at Cranston High School West beginning at 9 a.m. Everyone 55 years or older is invited to participate. The registration fee is $15, and golf (Sept. 20 through Sept. 22) is $70 per person. Visit the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, 1070 Cranston St., for registration forms.

Caregiver stress program

On Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 12:30 p.m., the Villa at Saint Antoine, in collaboration with DC Putnam Consulting, will be offering a free informal presentation about caregiver stress and ways to reduce it. Caring for someone with an illness, injury, or disability can be rewarding, but it also can be challenging. Caregivers are often at risk of health issues such depression and/or anxiety. Tim White to speak at

Senior Guild meeting

At the Cranston Senior Guild meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m., at Tamarisk Assisted Living, 3 Shalom Drive in Warwick, investigative reporter Tim White from Channel 12 will speak about fighting fraud and exposing corruption. Tim is the recipient of three New England Emmy Awards for investigative reporting. He was honored for a 2010 series of stories probing government waste in Rhode Island. He won his second Emmy for 2012 coverage of Providence’s troubled pension system. A 2014 probe into a lack of accountability at a local fire district led to his third Emmy honor. After White’s presentation, the Cranston Senior Guild will have a short meeting followed by refreshments and a raffle. All men and women ages 55 years and older are welcome to join. Host families needed

Consider hosting an international exchange student through AFSUSA. Each year, more than 2,300 students from 90 countries come to the U.S. to study in our high schools and live with host families. By hosting an AFS exchange student, you will begin to see the world differently.
