Fright Night

The Johnston Panthers second annual “Fright Night: A Haunted Attraction” will be held Friday, Oct. 23 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 16 Jasmine Lane in Johnston. The cost is $10, with 50 percent of proceeds donated to the league. Parents, siblings, relatives and friends are all invited to attend. Organizers ask that attendees please be respectful and responsible because it is a residential area. There is plenty of parking on the street.

Tales of the macabre

The Mohr Library will feature The Corpse That Drove a Hearse and other true tales of the macabre on Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. Author and historian Jim Ignasher of Smithfield will present strange but true tales just in time for Halloween. These are not ghost stories, but historically documented cases virtually forgotten since they occurred. Please note that these stories are true, and will be presented in a tasteful manner, however, due to subject matter, the presentation is geared for adults and is not recommended for children.For more information, contact the Mohr Library at 231-4980, ext. 6.

Job Ready at Tri-Town

Tri-Town Community Action Agency will accept applications on an ongoing basis to its Job Ready career exploration program for upcoming sessions. The program kicked off in October, and is expected to be held quarterly during the year as needed.

Job-seekers from 18 to 24 years of age who are not attending school can apply to the five-week, free program that helps candidates find a career path that matches their skills and interests. A 20-hour orientation program is presented during the first week, including lessons on improving soft skills, like work ethic and problem solving; enhancing work readiness; understanding financial literacy; preparing for job interviews; and completing CPR, First Aid, and AED training.

Other program highlights include a 100-hour paid job shadow opportunity, with the potential to participate in the On the Job Training [OJT] or Work Immersions program offered by the Rhode Island Department of Employment and Training.

A work-eligible social security number and eligibility to work in the U.S. are required. Participants must also be available for the entire length of the program, 25 hours per week for five weeks. Paid work experience can take place at nights and weekends.

Residents of Rhode Island except Cranston and Providence who can participate in programs in those cities are eligible to take part in the Tri-Town hosted program.

Bowl-a-Thon

There will be a Bowl-a-Thon sponsored by Defenders of Animals on Nov. 8 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Town Hall Lanes in Johnston. For $20 per person, participants will receive two hours of bowling, a pizza and a pitcher of soda for each lane. Haunted Woods

There is a Haunted House being sponsored by Bot Scout Troop 1 in North Scituate on Oct. 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is one can of food per person. Fundraiser featuring New England’s best comedians

Goodwill Industries of Rhode Island is partnering with Funny 4 Funds for a performance from some of the regions top comedians on Oct. 30 from 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Warwick Knights of Columbus, located at 475 Sandy Lane in Warwick. Tickets are $20 per person, and tables of eight may be reserved. There will be a cash bar and BYOS (bring your own snack), a 50/50 raffle, and table sponsorships are also available. The North Central Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Business After Hours networking event on Oct. 28 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Raffi Merjik and Associates, located at 26 Hartford Pike in North Scituate. Tanzi to speak

at Cranston East

Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, a Cranston native and one of the worlds foremost Alzheimers disease researchers, is coming back to his hometown on Oct. 28 to benefit the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center with his presentation, Ending Alzheimers Disease by 2025. Tickets are $25 for general admission, and $125 tickets include a VIP reception and book signing. The event will be held at Cranston High School East, Tanzis alma mater. Cranston Senior Guild

The Cranston Senior Guilds annual Holiday Party will be held at West Valley Inn, 4 Blossom St. in West Warwick, at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The cost of the lunch is $21, which includes soup, salad, pasta, entree and dessert. Collecting new and

gently used coats

The Villa at Saint Antoine, in collaboration with Neighborhood Alliance of Pawtucket and other local businesses and faith-based organizations, is collecting new and gently used coats, scarves, and gloves for the Warm Heart Buy Nothing Coats Day happening on Friday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Pawtucket Visitors Center. If you would like to donate warmth to local neighbors this winter, please consider dropping off your coats at the Villa at Saint Antoine, located at 400 Mendon Road in North Smithfield, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Nov. 1 until Nov. 26. Winter Bazaar

A Winter Bazaar will be held on Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Assembly of God 2119 Hartford Ave. in Johnston. It will feature many vendors including lunch, the grannies attic section (yard sale items) and our silent auction. Vendors include Avon, handmade items of all sorts, jams, bows, tutus, music, art and more.
