Did You Know?

Because of its wide variety of trees, the Eastern United States, especially the Northeast, is one of the best places in the world for viewing fall colors. Maples, oaks, elms, birch trees and ash trees are just a few of the trees that give spectacular colors during the autumn season. What gives leaves their color? Red comes from glucose trapped in the leaves. Brown comes from the waste trapped there. The red and purple colors come from anthocyanin pigments formed in the dying leaves. It’s the same pigment that is common in purple grapes, red apples and violets. (Fall Fun Facts)
