Shop local on Small Business Saturday
Pete Fontaine
Lori Boffi, who owns Card$mart at 1507 Hartford Avenue in Johnston, spent much of last weekend decorating her store in preparation for Small Business Saturday that will also run nationwide Nov. 24.

While many people were busy planning for Thanksgiving this week, local business people are focused on this weekend’s Small Business Saturday.

“Everyone shops big box stores on Black Friday and Cyber Monday on their computers. We are hoping people will come out Saturday and support Small Business Saturday,” said Lori Boffi, who just a year ago opened Card$mart at 1507 Atwood Avenue in Johnston.

Card$mart has expanded store hours for the week and will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Boffi isn’t the only area small business owner hoping to gain a boost in business Saturday. Deborah Ramos, president of the North Central Chamber of Commerce, announced that Charming Treasures of North Scituate, The Hop Scotch Room of North Providence and Wishes Under Wrap of Johnston would participate in a Shopping Shuttle Saturday promotion.

“Kick off the holiday season and of course your holiday shopping Saturday,” Ramos said. “It’s a great day to buy local, buy small.”

The Shopping Shuttle Saturday will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and participating businesses will offer deals. Guests will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant as well.

Tickets are $10 per person in advance and $15 the day of and will be available on a limited basis. Tickets can be purchased at the Johnston Senior Center, North Bay Retirement Living, Pocasset Bay Retirement Living and the North Central Chamber of Commerce. The shuttle will leave from the Johnston Senior Center, North Bay and Pocasset Retirement Living. For more information call 349-4674.
