Seniors start strong at state tournament

After cruising through the District 1 tournament for yet another title, the Johnston Senior League all-star team got its pursuit of a state championship off on the right foot and is now just one game away.

Johnston received a bye in the three-team state tournament, putting it in the winner’s bracket final immediately. It took advantage of being in that spot, taking down District 3 winner East Greenwich 10-0 on Sunday for a berth in the state championship game.

Johnston was scheduled to take on District 4 winner Smithfield for the title on Wednesday night, with the results unavailable at press time. Since Johnston has not lost yet in the tournament, it would have to lose twice to be eliminated, while only having to win once to earn the title.

If it lost to Smithfield Wednesday, Johnston would play in the winner-take-all game today at 5:30 p.m. All games in the tournament are played at Exeter-West Greenwich.

The winner of the state tournament advances to the Senior Little League East Regional, hosted by New Jersey’s West Deptford Little League. The regional runs from July 31 to Aug. 6.
