Scout’s project improves local trail

Johnston Boy Scout Troop 20, based at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church off Atwood Avenue, has a terrific tradition of producing Eagle Scouts.

In recent years, youngsters like Peter Pagliarini and Steven Hafey completed their Eagle Scout projects, leaving lasting impressions at such places as Gov. King Memorial Park on the Johnston Police Department property.

Just recently, Troop 20 added the name of Adam Bouchard to its prestigious list of Eagle Scout honorees.

The Eagle award is the highest presented by the Boy Scouts of America.

Bouchard completed his Eagle Scout project by beautifying part of the Stillwater Trail on Capron Road in Smithfield, where his group created an impressive and unique rest stop.

“We are ever so proud of Adam,” said his mother, Joanne. “He first had to ask for permission and then get approval for the project from the Smithfield Conservation Commission.”

Once he received the go-ahead, the project included clearing brush, putting down mulch, and fabricating and installing benches for public use.

Bouchard, meanwhile, issued a “sincere thank you” to the Smithfield Conservation Commission for approving the project and to Douglas Lumber, Scituate Lumber, and Central Nurseries of Johnston for their generous donations of the necessary materials.

He also thanked his fellow scouts who assisted – Damon Bedford, Derek Paquin, David Di Iorio, Zachary DiCarlo, Richard Ballirano, and Kenneth Card.

Bouchard is a junior at Johnston High School and plays trumpet in the Panthers band. He also plays guitar in the school’s jazz band. His interests include music, mathematics, and science.

“I’d like to pursue an engineering degree from MIT with the hopes of one day earning a doctorate,” he said.
