Save elephants from the bullhook

Posted

To the Editor:

Elephants in circuses or other traveling shows lead a miserable existence. Not only do they spend the majority of their lives in chains, but they are also subjected to a cruel physical and psychological abuse: the use of a bullhook. This inhumane training device includes a sharp metal hook that is used to poke, hit and hook elephants in most sensitive areas of their bodies. Circuses and traveling shows claim that the bullhook is a gentle way to train and control these massive, intelligent animals. But from an early age, an elephant is taught to fear the bullhook to the extent that even the sight of it causes emotional distress, causing them to perform tasks and tricks likely for the sole reason that, in doing so, they avoid punishment.

With the introduction of legislation, HB 8179/SB 2868, Rhode Island has the chance to change the way circuses and shows treat these amazing, cherished creatures. HB 8197 has just passed the House, and now the Senate must quickly follow suit. Please ask your state senator to support SB 2868 and protect captive elephants from cruel bullhooks.
