SPY

(Obscene, politically incorrect, but funny spy spoof)

Melissa McCarthy has gained a reputation as a foul-mouthed, assertive, full-bodied, gross, funny actress. She is all of the above in “Spy,” a James Bond spoof that is both obscene and politically incorrect, while having some very funny moments.

McCarthy plays a desk-bound “eyes and ears” to Bradley Fine, a super spy (Jude Law), following him closely on her computer as he travels around the world killing bad guys. When Fine is assumed dead, the CIA needs somebody unknown to “track and report.” It doesn’t take long for the inexperienced but overzealous Susan Cooper to find herself in the middle of the action. She travels from Bulgaria to France to Italy to Budapest, getting in deep trouble, but always coming out smelling like a rose.

There are some funny moments, but the plot is so convoluted and the profanities so overused that I quickly tired of the action. The movie goes on for over two hours, with chase after chase and hundreds being killed until the silly ending.

The large matinee crowd loved McCarthy and laughed at her every word and action. Jason Stratham has his moments as a rogue CIA operative and Rose Byrne has some funny moments as one mean, foul-mouthed (everybody in the movie is foul-mouthed) villain.  McCarthy’s stunt doubles earn their pay in this one.

Rated a big R because of the overworked profanity, violence, nudity, sexual references and one very gross vomiting scene.
