Zack Labrizzi (left), a hockey forward from Warwick and four-year starter for St. Raphael Academy/PSW, was honored as the male recipient of the “Chuck Scherza 2016 Unsung Hero” award presented by the RI Reds Heritage Society at their annual reunion on August 7 at Goddard Park in Warwick. The award is named after one of the Reds’ all-time great forwards and fan favorites. Zack was selected in a vote of RI Interscholastic hockey coaches. Despite being diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes, he has never let his illness define him. He serves as a mentor and volunteer counselor for youngsters who are early diagnosed. Also honored (from left) were Brittany Bidwell, a forward with the Cranston East/East Greenwich High School girl’s co-op; Victoria Hartley, goaltender for the LaSalle Academy girl’s hockey team; and David Gaulin, defenseman for Smithfield High School. Other recipients (not pictured) were Colin Clegg, goalie for Barrington HS, and Brynne Costa, defensive standout for the East Providence HS girl’s hockey team. (Submitted photo)
