After reading about the monthly Saturday lunch and food pantry at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on West Shore Road, Sen. Michael McCaffrey wanted to help. He’s not the only one to join in this community effort to assist those who can use an extra boost at the end of the month when funds can be tight. Surely, the youngest to help so far is Riley Fenway Xiarhos, daughter of Michael and Kelly Xiarhos. A parishioner at St. Mark’s, Riley Fenway asked those attending her third birthday party to bring donations of food in place of gifts. Recent assistance has also come from nearby Randall Holden School and the Girl Scouts. Held the last Saturday of the month, volunteers serve lunch to about 100. Pastor Mother Susan Wrathall said about 150 adults and 30 children “shop” the pantry. They are provided bags and urged to take what they need from canned and dried food to toiletries. For her, the sign of success is to find the pantry shelves bare by the end of the month. But they won’t stay that way for long. McCaffrey, seen here with Mother Susan and a box of “birthday food” gifts, donated $1,000 from his campaign fund to assist in restocking them. (Warwick Beacon photo)

    Dear Mike,

A great leader proves that he is a great leader when he is doing good deeds that no one asked him to. You took it upon yourself to donate to this worthy cause and you did it in no small manner.

    You are a great leader.

    Rick
