RWU students perform work for RI Tree Council

Saturday’s early morning rain didn’t dampen the spirits of two-dozen Roger Williams University students who performed some unique chores at the Rhode Island Tree Council in Johnston.

Under the leadership of John Campanini, who serves as technical director for the tree council, the RWU students mulched fruit trees, clipped and removed branches of fruit trees, watered trees, and even created vine shoots Saturday in Johnston.

Their effort was part of what RWU media relations manager Lynda Curtis called a “student-led Conservation Corps” that helped prep and plant 140 trees with the tree council at its home at 2853 Hartford Pike in Johnston.

“This is an effort to further the students’ commitment to addressing climate change through reforestation initiatives in Rhode Island,” Curtis said.

“The students also prepared more than 100 shade trees, including maple and elm trees that will be planted throughout Rhode Island on Arbor Day.”

She said the RWU workforce will also landscape and mulch 40 fruit trees – including apple and peach – in the tree council’s Johnston-based orchard.

“Our students planted the fruit trees last year,” Curtis went on.

“They’re returning today to help maintain the fruit trees, which may ultimately may be harvested and donated to nearby community food banks.”

The two-hour work session was also under the leadership of the university’s Stephen White.
