RIIFF spotlights independent films

The Rhode Island International Film Festival has been on our calendar every summer since festival director George Marshall brought the festival to our state, making it one of the premier festivals in the world.

This year was no exception, as the film showings included sites at the Vets, RISD, AS220, Newport, Jamestown, Woonsocket and other sites around our state and capital city.

We watched features, shorts, animated films, documentaries and a few far-out shorts, ranging from wine making in Portugal to Alzheimer’s disease to a film starring James Brolin with a shocking twist at the end.

Opening night at the Vets featured five short films, which along with other entries will be contenders for the short film category for the Academy Awards, a rare distinction for Rhode Island.

The festival calls attention to the important role that independent filmmaking has in the entertainment industry. Unfortunately, there are few outlets for these films, but, slowly, that is changing.

Rhode Island PBS now airs “Double Feature” on RIPBS Channel 36 every Friday night at 7 p.m.

As of this writing, the winners had not yet been announced, but they are all winners for keeping the art of independent filmmaking at such a high level.
