Pumpkin Patch students welcome baby chicks

Posted

Since the start of school in the fall, the students in Cheryl Martin’s Grey Elephants class at Pumpkin Patch Early Learning Center have anticipated the arrival of spring – and along with it, the eggs from Casey Farm that they would watch until they hatched.

Those who had been students at Pumpkin Patch over the years had their own memories of visiting the new baby chicks each year, and this spring it was their turn to participate in the project.

“This is definitely one of the highlights of the year,” Martin said. “They have talked about this since open house in the fall, waiting for the eggs to arrive.”

A representative from Casey Farm brought eggs to the school, along with all the materials needed for the students to take care of them while they were incubating. Last week, those eggs hatched, and 17 baby chicks were born. The chicks are a mix of both the Rhode Island Red and Dominique varieties, and their arrival coincides perfectly with the students’ study of the life cycle.

Activities throughout the unit of study have included predicting and tracking birth dates, naming chicks, and writing about all things chick-related. Next week, the students will take a field trip to Casey Farm and return the chicks.
