‘Proud to be an American’: Cherry Hill Manor honors veterans

It may have been one of Tracey Arpin’s finest hours during her tenure as activities director at the Cherry Hill Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Johnston.

“Veterans went through more than we can ever understand,” Arpin said last Wednesday. “It is so important for the staff here at Cherry Hill to pay tribute to them and thank them for their service. I’m proud to be an American and have the veterans to thank for our freedom.”

Thus, in honor of Veterans Day last week, Arpin coordinated yet another impressive celebration that included many emotional speeches, special pins, and several unique cakes.

Cherry Hill Manor began Veterans Day in the early morning by honoring its resident veterans with a personal United States flag pin.

“They were all thrilled,” Arpin said, noting that volunteer Joe Box, a Vietnam veteran, performed the actual pinning of each flag on all the veterans. He was assisted by Michael Woods.

The veterans were also honored with another unique surprise – an enormous doughnut cake made by Allie’s Donuts of North Kingstown with the words “Thank you for your service.”

“Our resident veterans also enjoyed music from the World War II era,” Arpin said. “What was also special about today was a friend of Cherry Hill resident Michael Woods delivered a touching speech and American flag sheet cake that all our veterans enjoyed.”

The celebration also included some Cherry Hill Manor residents sharing a few stories about their service. One veteran’s wife, Mary Ann Souza, explained how hard it was not having her husband there during those times, and also how very proud she was of her husband for serving his country.
